Senja Hiking Adventure

Join professional photographer Arild Heitmann on a 6 day adventure through the finest mountain areas of the amazing Senja Island. This is the trip for those who want to experience the true spirit of the mountain world in a less travelled area of Northern Norway. We will spend 5 nights wildcamping in some of the most spectacular areas in the world. The timing is set to late august, a period with great light and good hiking conditions.  We can also experience the magnificent aurora borealis! We will provide food and transport to and from the airport. We can arrange mountain tents for those who dont have this already.

If you want to return with unique shots and an experience of a lifetime, then this is the trip for you.

Itinerary

Day 1
Your airport of choice should Harstad Narvik Airport, Evenes. Arild will pick you up on arrival and head north towards Senja. This trip is special for several reasons. One of the big advantages is that we will be changing basecamps everyday by car. This means we can store gear and food in the car and only carry enough for 1 day at a time. This makes the backpacks much lighter and comfortable.
On this first day we will hike and camp on a mountain pass overlooking the fjord below.

Day 2 to 6
Each day we will camp on new locations, doing the finest hikes Senja has to offer. And Senja surely is a hikers paradise. Easy and within reach are famous spots like Segla, Barden, Keipen, Husfjellet, Breidtinden and Roalden. We have so much to choose from! arild will use his expertise to pick the right spots at any given time based on a lifetime of experiencing weather and conditions up in the north.

If you’re an advanced photographer you will also benefit from this tour, since it will give you access to a unique and wild area. Whatever your ability level we are able to provide the tuition or independence that you require. This will in no way be like large group workshops where you don’t receive the individual attention necessary to progress your photography. The long hours we spend together hiking make this a really immersive experience.

Required equipment

A full equipment list will be provided upon registration. We will provide cooking kits (we can share between us) and mountain tents. You will need to provide the remainder of the kit yourself. The Equipment we provide is mountain tents from Hilleberg & Helsport. You can ofcourse choose to bring your own tent.

You will be expected to carry all of your own kit, including the tent.

We will provide basic food for the trip. This will be Drytech high quality freeze dried food in portion packages. We set up food bags for every day that have enough calories to keep you going throughout the entire trip. There will also be a surprise or two in this regard.

Fitness & weather

This trip requires a small degree of fitness. Although there is no actual climbing and no technical routes, the distances and amount of ascent on certain stages can be a challenge for the uninitiated. However it is considered to be relatively easy hiking that are suitable for most who has done some hiking in the past. If in doubt please contact us. If you have any ongoing injuries (knee, ankle etc) this route is not suitable.

Late august is normally a great time to hike in Northern Norway. We hope for excellent weather and great light, but in the mountains everything is unstable. The only thing certain is that nothing is certain. We will continue to hike in most weather, it will still be fun! If we get clouded in by low clouds there is no point in staying up in the mountains. We then have the option to make a group decision to camp on lower ground or even book a fishermans cabin if the weather gets really bad.
