Description

Finnish Lapland Adventure

Enter a world of frozen creatures. A world of mystery and imagination. This trip is all about immersing ourselves in the winter covered forest. Going back to the same locations for several days chasing different conditions. Our aim is to return with unique imagery of an otherworldly landscape. We will walk around in the snow covered landscape looking for compositions everywhere. We can expect temperatures down to -35c or colder. Keep in mind that the air is a lot more humid than in a coastal place like Lofoten, but it won’t feel as extreme. However, it is important that you all have proper winter clothing. This means a good merino wool baselayer, a proper midlayer of high quality fleece or similar, and a super warm down jacket/parka and winter pants. Well insulated boots (like Sorel, balaclava, water resistant gloves, hats, heat packs etc are also highly recommended.

We will stay the entire week at a very nice lodge in the forest; Oivangin Lomakartano. We have 4-5 large cabins at our disposal, all with 3 – 9 bedrooms, each room has a private bathroom.  Each cabin also has a private sauna. The lodge has a restaurant on site for those that downt want to cook themselves, and there is also a spa area at the lodge, with an outdoor jacuzzi.

A rough itinerary will be several days in our main target: The world renowned Riisitunturi National Park. We will shoot the frozen alien trees under all kinds of conditions, if you have a drone make sure to bring one. We will try out different approaches to come home  with as much unique imagery as possible. Night photography in Riisitunturi is a very special and magical experience.
We will also shoot the Kitka river, a river that never freeze. A black vein in all the white, very cool. This is located in the Oulanka National Park, where we will also visit the famous Myllykoski location.

The greatest winter location on earth will be our target for 2 whole days. A snowmobile ride up to the Kuntivaara fell close to the Russian border. It is similar to Riisitunturi, but the trees are smaller and the area in general is more dense. This place is as close to being on a different planet as you will ever be. Its incredible! Our local handlers will provide a bonfire in the cabin at the top of the fell, a hot meal and warm drinks all day.

All of ours tours, workshops and masterclasses are open to beginners as well as professionals. Our only criteria is that you have a great passion for photography, and have the energy and motivation to be on the go every day and night.

What should I bring ?

Since we are exploring some of the coldest areas in the arctic, clothing is essential. This means a good merino wool baselayer, a proper midlayer of high quality fleece or similar, and a super warm down jacket/parka and winter pants. Well insulated boots (like Sorel, balaclava, water resistant gloves, hats, heat packs etc are also highly recommended,

Will I experience snow or ice ?

Yes. This is a true winter wonderland and we can expect huge amounts of snow.

Most likely yes. We are a bit south of the aurora oval, but when the aurora is trong we still get a good display. On both trips in 2019 we had good displays of the aurora.

What kind of weather can I expect ?

You can expect temperatures down to minus 35 degreees celsius. But more commonly between – 15 to -25.  It is often foggy in the area, which can often create a magical atmosphere when the sun breaks through.

At the very least, bring your own camera, lenses, tripod and a laptop. A detailed list of recommendations will be provided upon registration. If you are considering upgrading or investing in new camear gear prior to the trip, feel free to ask us for advice.

Is it possible to do other activities outside of the workshop?

Absolutely. About 25 minutes from our basecamp you will find Ruka Ski Resort, Finlands second largest resort, with a great variety of ski slopes and lifts. It is also possible to do husky dog sledding.
